Hey Sexy Thang,

Can I just say that it’s a harsh world out there when toothpaste (of all things) and certain water sources can potentially aid the growth of uterine fibroids! If you didn’t know, uterine fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that develop in the womb. As a 3x survivor of uterine fibroids I never thought that the daily habit of brushing my teeth with fluoride infused toothpaste and rinsing with local drinking water could have been making me sick. It was my background in environmental toxicology and lived experience that helped me understand fluoride and its link to fibroids. And, so, I want to share what I’ve learned with you, in hopes that it will save you time, frustration, and pain. No need for you to reinvent the wheel!

So, let’s start with a bit of history, shall we…

For decades in the United States, fluoride has been praised for its ability to protect teeth from tooth decay and has been in our toothpaste and drinking water since the mid-20th century. Today, fluoride is present in nearly 70% of the U.S. public water supply, and most toothpaste brands contain fluoride as a key ingredient. However, studies have long shown that excessive or prolonged fluoride exposure has been linked to several health concerns, most notably, hormonal disruption and imbalances, particularly in uterus owners*. Moreover, other countries, including parts of Europe, cite concerns over the health risks of fluoride and do not add fluoride to drinking water or regulate it in consumer products.

Let’s dig a bit deeper into fluorides' connection to hormonal health and thus fibroids…

Research has suggested that fluoride may act as an endocrine disruptor, meaning it could interfere with the body’s hormone system. Some studies suggest that fluoride could also influence estrogen levels. Why is this important? Well, Sexy Thang, estrogen is a hormone that plays a key role in the development of fibroids.

You see, fibroids are particularly influenced by hormonal changes in estrogen because uterine fibroids are estrogen dependent. Research has shown that uterus owners who experience higher levels of estrogen may have a higher risk of developing fibroids. Since fluoride interferes with the body’s hormonal balance, particularly estrogen, it can contribute to fibroid growth.

Does fluoride only affect estrogen?

Fluoride may impact thyroid function, another hormone-producing gland that regulates metabolism and overall health. Disruptions in thyroid hormones can have far-reaching effects on the body, potentially contributing to weight gain, fatigue, and other issues that can indirectly affect fibroid growth.

So, what do we do now??

Well, Sexy Thang, I know this was a lot of information and it can even feel a bit scary. However, knowledge is power. And if you have fibroids, have dealt with fibroids, or just want to keep harmful things out of your body then let's begin by removing fluoride. The most common place you’ll find fluoride is in toothpaste. Therefore, switching to fluoride-free toothpaste could be a good first step. There are several natural and effective toothpaste options available that do not contain fluoride. I’ve created a list of my top favorite fluoride free toothpaste brands* and where to purchase them. Click below and brush your teeth knowing that fluoride wont potentially affect your health any longer.

I'm Rooting for you Sexy Thang,

*I use the term uterus owner(s) instead of women/woman/female because it is more inclusive. As a queer, pansexual who uses They/Them pronouns I do not see having a uterus to be mutually exclusive to the binary term of women/woman/female.
